Jones was raised in Midland, Texas. There he attended Robert E. Lee high school. After his parents moved to Dallas in Texas, Jones was granted a scholarship to St. Mark’s School of Texas. He graduated in 1965.

Jones received a scholarship for his college that was based upon his need to study English at Harvard College. Jones was a Harvard roommate of Al Gore, the future Vice President.
