Pete received his commission as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army National Guard in 2003. He worked as a guard in Guantánamo Bay where he held the positions of civil-military operations officer in Samarra and the leader of an infantry platoon in Baghdad immediately after he returned from Cuba.

He worked at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research after leaving Iraq, he then served as an executive director for Vets For Freedom from 2007 until 2010. Not only that, but he has also worked as military personnel for Fox News Channel during that time.

Pete is a permanent member of the Council on Foreign Relations as well as a contributor to National Review Online. He has penned several editorials For “The Washington Post,” “The Washington Times,” “The Wall Street Journal,” and “The New York Post.
