She signed on as a cheerleader for the newly formed New Jersey Generals, a USFL team, in 1982 while still a student at Wayne Valley High School. However, she felt humiliated when the squad started making them stand in their uniforms at bars, so she organized a cheerleading strike.
She obtained her high school diploma from Wayne Valley in 1984. She relocated to New York City to study theatre at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, despite her parents’ desire for her to pursue a career in law. She was raised in Wayne and at first struggled to fit in, spending most of her time alone.

She was inspired to write and compose a musical titled Positive Me by her visit to the hospitals. It made its debut in 1989 at the renowned off-Broadway theater La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in Manhattan and won praise from critics.
