Hugh Hefner was the elder son of Grace and Glenn Hefner. Hefner was born on the 9th of April 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. Hiis parents were strict Methodists and had deep Midwestern roots.

He was a student at Sayre Elementary School as well as Steinmetz High School. He was interested in journalism from an early age and started a school newspaper in high school. 

He was a U.S. Army officer for two years towards the end of World War II. He was then discharged in 1946. He used to write articles for a military newspaper. He was there from 1952 to 1952 and then left when he was denied a $5 increase. In his determination to create his publication, he mortgaged furniture and raised funds from investors.
